Shirou Emiya lost his parents in a fire when he was young and was later adopted by a sorceror by the name of Kiritsugu Emiya.
Although he was full of admiration for his adopted father and yearns to become an ally of justice, Shirou has limited powers and was unable to become a strong sorceror like his father, because he lacked talent, he could obtain only one magic spell despite several years' training..
It is said that the Holy Grail grants wishes to he who wields it. To materialise the Holy Grail, a ritual is about to be held. The Holy Grail will choose seven wizards (masters) and give them seven familiar spirits (servants).
Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker.
The master contracts with one of seven familiar spirits that plays one of the above roles (classes). The master must prove that he is qualified to have the Holy Grail, meaning that he must eliminate other masters to show he is the strongest. This ritual is called "The Holy Grail War".
Until one day, the main character is accidently involved in a fight between two opposing masters. As he is dying, a girl suddenly appears and saves him.
"...Now, I ask you. Are you my master?"
He contracts with one of the seven servants, Saber. Willingly or not, he becomes a master, and plunges into a war over the Holy Grail...
My opinion :
I have always felt that Fate/Stay Night was a little overrated. I enjoyed the anime, but to say that it was one of the best is a little too much. You can search a review on google, and most are favourable. Some have gone so far as to give it a 9 out of 10 star rating. I disagree with them . I have always believed that there are numerous other animes of similar plot that are far better than Fate/stay Night. The anime would have been a classic one , but for the poor charachter development and rushing through the storyline dampened the overall effect of a good plot. I would recommend anyone who hasn't watched the anime to read the visual novel first. It's more subtle and has a definite pace in storyline. And for those who have read the novel and watched the anime, i would ask them to check out Fate/Stay tune internet drama. I wish i could further discuss the various highs and lows of the anime, but for the time constraint it couldn't be done. Anyways, if you haven't watched the anime don't hesitate to do so now.
